Default John 20:22

"As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit."

This is prior to the Pentecost. Did the apostles received the Holy Spirit right there? If not, what Jesus meant?

READ John 20:19-23

It is Pentecost
"Now when it was late that same day, the first of the week, and the doors were shut, where the disciples were gathered together, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them: Peace be to you. And when he had said this, he shewed them his hands and his side. The disciples therefore were glad, when they saw the Lord.
He said therefore to them again: Peace be to you. As the Father hath sent me, I also send you. [22] When he had said this, he breathed on them; and he said to them: Receive ye the Holy Ghost. [23] Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them; and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained".

As the Father has SENT ME; SO TOO I [your perfect God] do send you [with my Powers and Authority]

John 17:7-20 "Sanctify them in truth. Thy word is truth. As thou hast sent me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. And for them do I sanctify myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth. And not for them only do I pray, but for them also who through their word shall believe in me"

IF your still in doubt please READ Mt. 10:1-8

God Bless you,

They received the Holy Spirit when He first breathed on them, as scriptures say. But Pentecost is the Power Jesus spoke of. "Wait until you are clothed with power" I believe it reads. Both are actions of the Spirit.

That's how I read it anyway.

From the Hatydock Commentary:

Quote:
Ver. 22. Receive ye the Holy Ghost. It was said, (John vii. 39.) that the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not glorified. The sense must needs be, that the holy Spirit was not given in that solemn manner, nor with so large an effusion of spiritual gifts and graces, till the day of Pentecost, after Christ's ascension: but the just, at all times, from the beginning of the world, were sanctified by the grace of the Holy Ghost, as no doubt the apostles were, before this time. Now at this present, he gave them the power of forgiving sins. (Witham) --- Some say, that our Saviour did not then confer the Holy Ghost on his disciples, but only prepared them for the receiving of the Holy Ghost. But surely we may understand, that even then they received some portion of spiritual grace, the power, not indeed of raising the dead, and working other miracles, but of forgiving sins. (St. Chrysostom, hom. lxxxv. in Joan.) --- St. Cyril of Alexandria, speaking of the remission of sins, promised in this text, asks, "How then, or why, did Christ impart to his disciples a power, which belongs to the divinity alone? It seemed good to him, that they, who had within themselves his divine Spirit, should likewise possess the power of forgiving sins, and of retaining such as they judged expedient; that Holy Spirit, according to his good pleasure, forgiving and retaining, through the ministry of men." (In Joan. lib. xii. chap. 1.)
However, this cannot be read in isolation from:

Mark 16:14-18

Jesus Commissions the Disciples

Quote:
14 Afterward he appeared to the eleven themselves as they sat at table; and he upbraided them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. 15 And he said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
Commissioning them is one thing which is done by the Holy Spirit. Empowering them at the Pentecost is quite another. The first is the bestowing of authority, while the second is the giving of the tools that they will need for ministry.

PJM,

Read all of John 20

It is Easter morning, not Pentecost!

(John 20:1) On the first day of the week,a Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb. ...

(John 20:19) On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” ...

(John 20:26) Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.”

"Receive"...yes... with actual graces for the "task" given to them by Christ...but it is not yet Pentecost..

At Pentecost...the gift of permanence of the "indwelling" of the Holy Spirit is given...the gift of "sanctifying grace"...to continually share in the actual life of God as adopted Sons & Daughters of God the Father and actual brothers and sisters of Christ himself.

For sure...they are two significant gifts,,,but the permanence of indwelling at Pentecost...is "light years" (so to speak) beyond anything given in actual graces for the task given by Christ.

Look at it like actual graces give the apostles a power element of the Holy Spirit...but in the Pentecost...they are given the Holy Spirit himself...a personal God indwelling in them with all his gifts and powers...an incredibly more powerful gift...the Holy Spirit has made them his Tabernacle/Temple...forever

This fullness of the Spirit was not to remain uniquely the Messiah’s, but was to be communicated to the whole messianic people. On several occasions Christ promised this outpouring of the Spirit, a promise which he fulfilled first on Easter Sunday and then more strikingly at Pentecost - CCC 1287

God bless

true and Very TRUE: BUT

ONLY the CC ALSO Has Jesus Christ to act as the warranty of Het Teaching [being unable to not tell God's TRUTH; on ALl matters of Faith-Belief and Morals.

John 14:15-20
" I [Jesus] pray not that thou shouldst take them out of the world, but that thou shouldst keep them from evil. They [MY Apostles] are not of the world, as I also am not of the world. Sanctify them in truth. [God CANNOT deny Himself] Thy word is truth. As thou hast sent me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. [And for them do I sanctify myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth. [20] And not for them only do I pray, but for them also who through their word shall believe in me"

Amen

I understand the Apostles received 3 different doses of the HS: at Baptism (assuming they were Baptized by Jesus); in the Upper Room; and at Pentecost.

no, not really.

The Holy Spirit IS God;and God is Perfect, so as long as we are Baptized and remain in th "'State of Grace," which means no unconfessed or unforgiven Motal Sins; the Holy Spirit dweels in us.

1 John 1;8-10
1 John 5; 16-17
John 20:19-23

Once we have the "In-dwelling" our chairty; our piety and our prayers effect the amount and types of assistance we are given.

interesting question-- but really have you functioned in the gifts of the Holy Spirit?

probably not-- or you would not have asked this question-- and i don't really see any one on this post-- that has functioned in the fullness
REVELATION, POWER AND UTTERANCE

The nine manifestations of the Holy Spirit can be broken down into three categories: revelation gifts, power gifts, and utterance gifts.

REVELATION GIFTS (A gift manifestation that knows something.)

1. A word of wisdom

2. A word of knowledge

3. Discerning of spirits

POWER GIFTS (A gift manifestation that does something.)

4. Gift of faith

5. Gifts of healing

6. Miracles

UTTERANCE GIFTS (A gift manifestation that speaks something.)

7. Prophecy

8. Divers (diverse) kinds of tongues

9. Interpretation of tongues

These manifestations of the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit are given to every son and daughter of God after they are baptized in the Holy Ghost.

Notice “the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.” When you receive “the gift", the Holy Spirit, you also receive the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit “dividing to every man severally as He wills.

” These gifts are not just for the preacher, they are for every born again believer that is baptized with the Holy Ghost.

He is that “same Spirit” Paul was referring to.
